Product Description

Produced by cold drawing high-carbon steel wire rod, then stranding seven wires (one center wire with six outer wires helically wrapped) to form a compact, high-strength bundle. Features high tensile strength, low relaxation, excellent fatigue resistance, and good bond with concrete. Available grades: 1860 MPa, 1770 MPa, 1570 MPa, 2000 MPa (ultra-high strength). Strand configuration: 1×7 (standard), 1×3, or 1×19. Nominal diameter: 9.5mm – 21.8mm (most common: 12.7mm, 15.2mm, 15.7mm). Cross-sectional area: 50mm² – 300mm². Relaxation class: low relaxation (Class II, ≤2.5% at 1000h) or normal relaxation (Class I). Surface finish: plain (uncoated), epoxy-coated, or galvanized. Manufacturing: wires are drawn, stress-relieved, and stranded under controlled tension, then optionally heat treated for low relaxation. Meets ASTM A416, EN 10138, BS 5896, JIS G3536, or GB/T 5224 standards. Custom diameters, lengths, and relaxation classes available.

Widely used in prestressed concrete structures such as bridges (box girders, segmental bridges), high-rise buildings, parking garages, water tanks, nuclear containment vessels, railway sleepers, and post-tensioned slabs. Also suitable for ground anchors, cable-stayed bridges, mining roof support, and tension members. High tensile strength and low relaxation ensure long-term structural efficiency and crack control.

Production description

High-carbon steel wire rod is drawn to precise diameter, then stress-relieved by heat treatment. Seven wires (one center, six outer) are helically stranded together under controlled tension. For low relaxation strand, the product is further heat treated. The strand is then cut to length, inspected for tensile strength, relaxation, and lay uniformity.

Shipping Packaging

For export, steel strand coils are wrapped with VCI paper and moisture-proof polyethylene, secured with steel straps, packed on ISPM-15 wooden pallets or steel skids, and fitted with edge protectors. Labels include grade, diameter, length, and heat number for safe sea freight.

FAQ

1. How to store steel strand to prevent corrosion and maintain performance?

Store indoors on dry, clean wooden pallets or racks, keep original moisture-proof wrapping intact. Avoid contact with water, oil, acids, or chlorides. For long-term storage, maintain humidity below 60%. Surface rust that does not reduce wire diameter is generally acceptable, but heavy corrosion should be avoided as it may affect fatigue life.

2. What is the difference between low relaxation and normal relaxation steel strand?

Low relaxation strand (Class II) has a relaxation loss ≤2.5% at 1000 hours under 70% of ultimate strength, offering better long-term prestress retention, ideal for post-tensioned and pretensioned concrete structures. Normal relaxation strand (Class I) has higher relaxation loss (≥4.5%), suitable for less critical applications or where frequent tension adjustments are possible.

3. Can steel strand be cut or welded on site?

Cutting should be done with an abrasive saw or hydraulic shear – never use oxy-acetylene torch as heat damages mechanical properties. Welding is not recommended because high heat alters the high-carbon steel structure and reduces tensile strength. For field connections, use approved mechanical couplers or anchorages.
